Myriad Genetics Intranet Web Design, Developtment & Programming

As Myriad Genetics Webmaster, in addition to day-to-day maintenance of Myriad's public websites, I manage Myriad's Intranet--the employee interface for Company news, annoucnments, policies, employee directory, system interfaces, searches, message boards, et cetera, et cetera. Management of this Company resource is one of my favorite responsibilities because I get to provide employees with the information they need and I have the opportunity to interact with an incredibly talented and diverse group of people including programmers from around the world as well as Utah natives. Myriad Genetics is a fascinating workplace and companies that attract smart and accomplished people are the very best kinds of places to work for.

Main Responsibilities

My main Intranet responsibilities as Webmaster for Myriad are site design & layout, web copy writing, content management, document management (including Materials Safety Data Sheets, Standard Operating Procedures, Forms & Company Policies), site analysis, user interface programming for the online employee directory (including directory search, org charts, phone lists, birthday lists, text-only output & custom queries) and other web application programming. Emphasis is placed on speed and usability. Several employees still access our Intranet via modem connections beginning at 28.8 kbs.

Major Accomplishments

I designed and coded the user interface for Myriad's Intranet. I am proud to say the directory-style navigation interface has received several compliments from employees. I have also developed several web applications for Myriad. Several of these applications were designed and coded by me from the ground up using technologies like Perl, Perl::DBI, PHP, MySQL and Oracle.

		Site Design & Layout I developed the design and layout for Myriad's Intranet. The design is based on a directory-style interface and is built for speed. There are limited graphics and a clear navigational layout. Click for Home Page screenshot. Click for Human Resources screenshot.
		Image Gallery I implemented image gallery software to catalog Myriad's image collection. Galleries are password protected. I had to modify the gallery to provide an easy way to download hi-res versions of some images and provide licensing rights information for some collections.
		Invention Disclosure Form Using PHP, the Invention Disclosure Form is output directly to PDF format. This allows the Intellectual Property Department more control over the look of the form and its readability while still allowing some text manipulation options.
		Document Management In order to manage the many documents at Myriad, I created a document management interface where users can log in, upload files and modify the document lists that appear on Intranet pages. These interfaces were built using Perl and flat file databases.
		Journal Catalog & Database Search I built a Journal Catalog and Search system using PHP/MySQL. Research Administration staff uses this interface to catalog Myriad's journal collection located in three separate company libraries. Use of Myriad collections has increased because employees can search or browse a list that was previously only available in print. 		User Interface to Oracle Employee Directory Information I developed and coded the user interface for employee directory information contained in Myriad's Oracle Applications System. The interface is streamlined to be fast and output is provided in several formats. This application is coded using Perl, Perl::DBI and Oracle. Click for Phone List screenshot.
		Email List Query Coded an interface to Myriad's LDAP server using Perl and Net::LDAP.
		Time Sheets Myriad only recently upgraded from a paper time sheet system. I moved the time sheets from front desk printouts to the Intranet in PDF format. I added form elements and calculations to reduce math errors. Providing a way for users to type directly onto forms also eliminated hand-written readability problems and improved efficiency in our payroll processing. .
		Myriad Message Boards Message Boards were recently added to the Intranet in order to develop a sense of only community. I have promoted online community at Myriad as our company grew from 270 to 500+ employees nationwide. Click for Myriad Message Boards screenshot.
		Intranet Search Implemented an open source search fucntion for Myriad's Intranet. I modified the output for the search and actively manage web pages that will result in better findability. Click for search results screenshot.
